The number one problem for the elephants of Sumatra are the palm plantations. Destroying the natural habitat and causing wild herds to have to relocate and often wandering into nearby villages causing conflicts with humans and often elephants lose their lives.

Critically Endangered
The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) a subspecies of the Asian elephant and native to the island of Sumatra, Indonesia is currently listed on the IUCN red list as critically endangered with the wild population estimated to be reduced by more than 80%. Habitat loss, degredation, fragmentation and poaching are the main threats to the wild population. Over 70% of habitat loss has occurred over the last 25 years.
