    Elephants of Sumatra is a personal photography project to document the last of the remaining Sumatran elephants both in the wild and captive in government camps throughout the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. The documentary photographs are a direct record of life for the elephants of Sumatra. Some images may be disturbing or not in line with your beliefs on how elephants should be treated.

    Critically Endangered

    Elephas maximus sumatranusThe Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) a subspecies of the Asian elephant and native to the island of Sumatra, Indonesia is currently listed on the IUCN red list as critically endangered with the wild population estimated to be reduced by more than 80%. Habitat loss, degredation, fragmentation and poaching are the main threats to the wild population. Over 70% of habitat loss has occurred over the last 25 years.
