The elephants of Sumatra are currently listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List

The main issues causing decline in population and the conservation status of the Elephants of Sumatra are the:

  • Habitat Destruction due to the expansion of palm oil plantations. Thus leaving the elephants very little room and causing an increase in human and elephant conflict resulting in the rising deaths of wild elephants.
  • Poaching for ivory is another issue where elephants are killed for their ivory to sell on the black market.
