The Individuals

Big Girl Bona

While working on implementing the Breeding Program project in Seblat, Bengkulu it was nice to take some time out to see my baby girl Bona. I have been so busy in Sumatra so it has been a little while since catching up with Bona. She still remembers and still likes to remind me who the boss always is. It wouldn’t be Bona if she wasn’t still a little naughty.
Now Bona is a plump 700kg+ and in great health and truly getting big and as loud as ever trumpeting away at other family members if anyone annoys her or steps on her toes. Links and info below to follow and support my elephant projects.

Ucok Impatient

Ucok the BIG boy is GROWING impatient about the new electric fence plan where he will get to mingle with the rest of the herd free of chains. Two things about this photo and I have highlighted one of them. Small steps to creating a better environment for the elephants of PLG Seblat and the creation of an electric fence will allow the elephants to be free of chains and secondly to mingle creating the potential for breeding. Ucok is not wanting to wait any longer. As you can see. Details on how you can support below.

The Way She Was

The first week with Bona she was a scary sight. She couldn’t have been more than a few weeks away from death in her state. She was literally lifeless, could hardly walk and had no spirit. Her spirit was certainly drained. Literally you could see every bone in her body as she struggled from A to B. After 6 months of sugar water provided by the locals as a supplement for milk I guess it was to be expected. Thankfully Bona took to our supplements, a mixture of baby milk formula, marsupial milk replacer (Wombaroo) combined with coconut milk hot water a dose of love and 7 months later of hand feeding this gorgeous girl the rewards are priceless and nothing will ever take away that prode of knowing my actions saved a this gorgeous girls life.

Remembering her 2nd Birthday

Remembering the days Bona turned 2. We made her a fruit “cake” in the shape of the two. She lapped it up in under 5 minutes.

Tail Bite

Baby Rosa had her tail bitten by one of the older males so she needed to have it looked at and eventually the tip of her tail was amputated. This might not look ideal but this is exactly how things work in Indonesia in order to properly treat elephants their need to be restrained, especially the juveniles.

Delicious Treats

Bona transitioned from milk supplements to eating tasty treats very well with the help of her surrogate mother Aswita. Looks like she is enjoying wrapping her tongue around that tastly palm frond.

She LOVES It!

I spent 7 months hand raising Bona and during those months I tried my darndest to implement a system for the two local (carers) mahouts so they could help with the daily milk feeds in the event of my absence when I needed to be back in the city. I succeeded in convincing one carer to provide regular feeds in that time but the second carer was a little more stubborn. It wasn’t until towards the end of the seven months that the second carer participated in a milk feed one afternoon.  He was always adamant that Bona never needed any more milk. As you can see by the surprise on his face in this photo, being the first ever time he provided her a bottle of milk during some domestic training. The surpise is clear to see at how eager Bona is to take her milk.

My Boy Harris

A close up “portrait” of Harris. This is one of my favourite shots of any of my 10’s of 1000’s of photos I have taken over the last 5 years. I think this image really evokes some emotions from the scarred tusks of Harris showing the harsh life he has gone through from circus elephant to now residing and patrolling the forests of TWA Seblat.
